Can criminal behavior while still in or out of the military cause someone to have their Medal of Honor stripped from them? What are grounds for revocation of a Medal of Honor?Under what circumstances can a Medal of Honor be revoked?
It can only be revoked by an act of Congress - and then only if evidence is introduced that the investigation and evidence used to justify the award was either erroneous or falsified.
That's why there are so many layers of approval for them - and over a year's worth of investigation - they don't want to approve it if there is ANY doubt.Under what circumstances can a Medal of Honor be revoked?
It would have to turn out the situation for what they given it, turned out not to be the truth. However, because of the intensive background searching and fact finding, its highly unlikely it was undeserved before being awarded it.
It cannot be revoked for criminal convictions.
For example, being awarded a silver star for killing 10 insurgents and saving the lives of your comrades, then you go home and get in a drunk brawl. Sure, you got in a brawl, but it doesn't mean you didn't save the lives of your pals.Under what circumstances can a Medal of Honor be revoked?
There is an old running joke in the military that basically states that a recipient of the MOH can get away with anything short of murder. To a certain extent this is true. The military doesn't want it known that a recipient of the highest award given could be a foul up.
That being said, l will state (as several ahead of me already have) that the only way it could ever be taken away is if it was found out that the award was under false pretenses to begin with. And chances are they would keep it very quiet.
